Potentially breaking news here. It looks like Francois Carrillo has just released a new domain escrow service – eCop.com! This doesn’t look like just any escrow service though, it provides flexibility among multiples parties and multiple scenarios all at an extremely low cost! Straight-up sales look like they cost $20 per action required by eCop (ie. $20 for possession + $20 for payment disbursement) or $25 for a non-possession-based escrow.

The coolest part of the new service is the flexibility in options. Leasing, swapping and complex sales can all occur with low fees of just $20 per action!

I am sure more details will be released soon as I only noticed the new site based on a banner at the bottom of Cax.com.

Congrats to Francois on another potentially great product!

Well, Bido has been back for a couple of weeks now. The media coverage was initially strong and the Bido team was consistently discussing their return publicly in forums and on their blog. For some reason, things have changed – everyone is quiet again. I understand the team is (hopefully) busy making changes, but the core audience/members would like to be kept in the loop. Here are a few of my observations from the last few days.

The Bido Blog. This was one of the features that Jarred initially discussed upon the return of Bido. The blog represents and outlet for the Bido staff to discuss new features, domains in auction and more. Posts were occurring every few days, but there has since been an 11-day silence.

Auction setup delay. In the past, Bido auctions were generally setup (after getting the votes needed) within a few hours and never more than 24 hours after the final vote was cast. I had a few domains get the required votes 3 days ago and have heard nothing. Perhaps the team is working on a revised auction schedule, but I haven’t heard anything.

Social interaction. Jarred has always done a great job addressing individual questions at the various domaining forums, but has remained silent over the past week. Also, the Bido Twitter accounts have remained largely inactive over the last week.

In 2009 and early 2010 I was one of the biggest Bido cheerleaders out there, but Bido will have to continue to improve to retain my attention. I sincerely hope that the lack of information over the last 10 days is due to some major changes, but it’s just hard not to think the worst.

Anyone else have any recent experiences or interactions to share?

UPDATE: My Bido auctions are now being setup so clearly their is some action going on. Hopefully Jarred posts to the Bido blog in the near future.

Short update here, folks! The domain, Possible.com, that recently sold at Cax/PremiumDomains for $351,000 is now a developed site. I can’t quite say the sale was official as there has been ZERO major media coverage of this sale – perhaps that buyer wanted to keep it quiet, but it was sold in a public auction. My previous post on the sale got a bit of attention, but mostly from people thinking the sale was the result of a deadbeat buyer – doesn’t look that way now.

Anyways, the domain is now a developed psychic portal with the tagline “The World’s Leading Psychic Network”. Congrats to the new owner on the domain and developed site!

Any long-time readers of Rural Technocrat know that I was a HUGE Bido fanboy. I feel that I made a pretty good chunk of change through them and always loved the customer service they offered. When Bido shut down, I was absolutely shocked, but guess what…now they are back! While I haven’t blogged on the return of Bido yet, and don’t plan to (it’s old news now), I want to talk about Bido’s new scheduling arrangement.

Basically, Bido has decided to group gTLDs and ccTLDs by geo-location so that auctions are ending at ideal times in those time zones. This is a great idea in theory, but really, I imagine that there aren’t many people from Cocos Islands looking to by .CC domains at Bido. Now, if the idea was to move these less desirable extensions to obscure times in order to focus on North American/European ccTLDs and gTLDs, then I think it’s a VERY solid idea, but not without flaws.

First, the current auctions and live auction pages are full of .EU, .IN, .CC and other ccTLDs (disclaimer: I have submitted a couple of .CC domains myself). Many of these are decent quality with some of them receiving bids at or above the Bido Price – so some ARE selling. The issue that I see is that better quality gTLDs are getting hidden amongst these more obscure extensions – this leads to my second and more relevant caveat.

Right now it appears that gTLDs make up maybe half of the upcoming auctions at Bido. With the current schedule layout, I was able to have a .CC auction setup for 3 days from now, whereas if I wanted to setup a gTLD auction I would have to wait until November 21st!! In the past I always viewed Bido as a quick way to sell domains. Auction setup was always very quick and generally you could find an available slot within 2 days. Waiting almost 2 weeks for your auction to start really doesn’t work for me. Perhaps I am just an impatient domainer looking for immediate results, but one friend of mine shares the same sentiment.

Before you think that I am bashing Bido’s new format, I’m really not. Jarred has been very open about taking the time to find a balance between domain quality and sales. This will take time and I think this scheduling experiment will help make Bido better in the future. A scheduling tweak that keeps ccTLDs to every 5 minutes in their time periods, but allows gTLDs to be auctioned every 2 minutes, instead of every 6, could be one of many solutions to the two issues I have presented. I am sure something is currently in the works and I am quite certain that Bido will continue to become better and better.

If you want to read some top-quality posts on Bido’s return check out the articles posted at the following sites:
Francois promoted the hell out of this domain when the $80,000 reserve was met and the domain was sent to a 7-day public auction. The bidding would remain at a reasonable $93,000 until just 10 minutes before the 5PM EDT ending. The next hour turned into a bidding war between two members known under the aliases D.
The sales page on Cax shows that payment has yet to be made, but I am sure any sale of this price can take some time for escrow.

Recently, the people over at DomainConsultant launched a brand new domain marketplace under the brand Boxcar. Over the past year I have sold domains through Sedo, domain forums, BargainDomains, newsletters, Bido (my personal favourite may they for ever RIP) and even on Twitter. So why try a new subscription-based marketplace? My response to that is simple – why not?

I decided to list a single-word .net domain with an Estibot value of $12,000 and very decent search numbers. I bought this domain in a GreatDomains auction, so I figured there would be interest at Boxcar given a reasonable reserve. To list, I paid $19.95 for my one-year membership and just a $5 listing fee – Boxcar does not get a commission on sales, their revenue model is based on membership, listing and upgrade fees. I set the reserve to $100, which would allow me to break even when factoring in what I paid for the domain, the membership cost and the listing fee.

After setting up my 7-day public auction, I sat back and waited for the bids to begin! After a couple of days the domain received the first bid, but that would be all until the end of the auction. Once the auction ended, I found the buyer email address in my Boxcar menu and made official contact! As there was no email notification from Boxcar regarding the sale, I had to ask the buyer what the buyer panel looked like on their end. They found the Boxcar-made PayPal invoice and quickly remitted payment and provided domain push details. I had my $100 (minus 3.6% PayPal fees) and the buyer had their domain! Not a bad process, but not much guidance from Boxcar when it comes to post-auction communication.

Okay, now that you know how it went down, let’s move on to what I like, what I don’t like, what I’d like to see and where I went wrong when it comes to the Boxcar marketplace.

What I like about Boxcar
Marketing. It seems that since Boxcar’s launch, they have been purchasing a sponsored listing at Domaining.com on a daily basis. These sponsored posts generally highlight certain listings and membership promotions. A couple of blog posts at DomainConsultant actually mentioned my domain, which was a huge benefit (they promoted it as a huge bargain).

Listing variables. Boxcar provides the seller with a plethora of auction variables. Be it preview time period, auction length, payment method, reserves, bid increments, and many more.

Billing. As the transaction is handled between the buyer and seller, Boxcar really helps out by offering automated PayPal and Escrow.com billing. Once the auction is closed, the buyer is provided with an invoice from either company depending on the seller and/or buyer preferences.

What I don’t like about Boxcar
Speed. Frankly, the speed of the site is quite poor for an auction platform. Performance is one of the issues that plagued Bido from the start, so I really hope Boxcar continues to address this concern. Last night, the site was unreachable for a couple of hours – something that cannot happen when auctions are in their final hours.

Varying membership rates. As far as I am aware, the normal price for a Boxcar membership is $39.95. They had a promotion that dropped this price to $29.95 and then $19.95 (this would be when I jumped on board). Since then, however, they have been advertising $1 memberships up until the end of October. This leaves us early adopters high and dry. I understand they have done this to gain memberships, but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I am not looking for a refund, but perhaps they could give us early adopters a few free listings or even a free feature for being there from the beginning (although, I suppose it still is the beginner).

Post-auction guidance. Once my auction completed, I did not receive any notification of sale from Boxcar – something I was awaiting. After a few hours I logged into my Boxcar account and manged to find the buyer email address. It would be nice if there was a short email notifying the seller that their domain sold with a link to their Boxcar page with the buyer details.

What I would like to see
Email notifications. I am a whore when it comes to refreshing my auciton pages to see if there has been a new bid. If there were email notifications when a bid is placed, I would no longer have to do so. Of course, I may be the only person that would do such a thing.

What I could have done better
Front-page listing. At $50, the front-page listing is quite expensive for a single-domain auction, but when I created my listing there was a $5 promotion going on. Yeah, I wish I took advantage of that one.

Promote my auction. At Boxcar, they provide the seller with plenty of tools to help promote their auctions. Widgets and personalized links, along with a sellers guide advising where the seller should promote are a great addition. Did I listen? Not so much. A few tweets here and there were all I did and that is really not acceptable, on my part.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with my Boxcar auction experience. I took a gamble with this domain and I am fine with that. There are plenty of great things to talk about when it comes to the Boxcar marketplace, but there are also those usual issues that plague any newcomer. I will most likely be waiting for Boxcar to mature a bit before listing again, but I have a strong feeling I’ll be back!

First off, thanks to everyone for the positive feedback relating to my previous post on my success selling domains at BargainDomains.com!

This time around, I have another positive experience to report. One of my high-quality keyword .TV domains sold at the buy-it-now price at BargainDomains! The sale price is nothing to brag about, just low $xxx, but it was a decent sale at what I feel was a very fair price (I truly believe the domain would have gone for much more if it went to auction).

Again, the transaction could not have been smoother. The domain was marked sold at 1:34pm, payment was confirmed at 2:01pm, and ownership change was confirmed at 2:35pm. I am still awaiting receipt of the proceeds, but Francois is normally on the ball issuing payment. A big thanks to all parties involved on making this yet another positive experience.

To close off, I asked the buyer how the domain listing was found and guess what! It was my post here on Rural Technocrat! I will try to keep key listings posted here in hopes of making more easy sales.

Have a great evening everyone!

Hey Everyone!

It has been quite a while since my last post – been a pretty busy summer up here in Ontario. Anyways, over the last couple of months I have only sold a handful of domains, but a good handful of these have been through Francois Carrillo’s BargainDomains.com.

By the numbers:
6 domains sold
$539.41 invested in those 6 domains
$1254.80 profit AFTER commission
$715.39 in net profit
132.6% overall return

I should also note that all of the domains sold were purchased in mid-2010, giving a VERY healthy yearly return. Additionally, nearly all buyers communicated how very happy they were with the price they paid for the domains. As a bargain aftermarket shopper myself, it is great to pass along these deals while making a decent profit in return. What is even better is that the 132.6% overall return is not too unlike the 192% returned I received across 91 sales at Bido.

With the removal of listing exclusivity, premium member flexibility and the reduction to a 7% commission, I think BagainDomains.com is one of the best places to sell domains with a decent Valuate.com/Estibot.com appraisal. The after-auction service provided by Francois is quick and courteous while the listing manager is simple and to-the-point – ideal for any auction site.

Not only has Francois’ vertical marketplaces provided me with some solid auction sales, it has given me the opportunity to build relationships with my buyers. I have had post-sale communication with two buyers that have already resulted in another couple of mid $xxx sales. This is rarely achieved at such a marketplace.

Be sure to check out my BargainDomains listings at DomainPortfolio!
