Well, it has been quite a while since I posted last. I have been busy acquiring high-quality end-user domains, while ditching (errr…trimming) much of my lower-quality inventory. In the past, I have always had success selling average-quality reseller domains at domaining forums such as NamePros and DNForums; however, I have recently found these places to be quite dry with far too much negotiation for names selling under $50. As an alternative, I figured it was time to start selling at eBay!
As most eBay transactions are completed under a veil of secrecy, I have heard horror stories from sellers where the buyer claims non-receipt of the domain with PayPal refunding their money – seller loses domain without getting paid. While this does happen, eBay domain auctions do receive quite a few views from potential buyers. As I was looking to sell domains for under $25, I figured this venue would be safe enough for me.
So far I have successfully “ditched” a bunch of LLLL.com’s (most of these went above what I was expecting), most of my premium .CC portfolio (again, most have gone well above what I was expecting) and a handful of ill-registered .info domains near expiry. So far, I have had about 95% of my domains sell (I always set reasonable reserves, if any at all) with 100% transaction completion! Methinks trimming my portfolio will continue at eBay! Now it’s time to test the market response for aged domains.
Tips for selling at eBay
- Set a fair reserve, if at all! Let the market decide what your domain is worth. Sure, you can play around with higher reserves, but consider what you would pay for the domain yourself. Besides, previous bids attract new bidders!
- Provide clear and concise details on your domain (age, registrar, create date, expiry, etc)
- Quick transactions – as a frequent buyer, I love nothing more than those 5 minute eBay transactions
