The Oldest Domain Names
October 18, 2009  |  Domaining

Fellow domainer, Arbel Arif, recently posted a great article regarding the status of the twenty oldest domain names. While I am still quite new to the industry, I am a sucker for reading about the history of domain names. The oldest name, Symbolics.com, was registered in 1985 and recently changed hands as another domainer acquired the name for an undisclosed amount of money. For more information on that transaction, check out Bruce Marler’s informative post.

When the domain name system was first put into place, organizations were largely focused on grabbing their initials – something that is still sought after by many organizations today. While none of the twenty oldest domains crack the Alexa top-100, there are a few – notably, Sun, HP, AT&T, IBM and Intel that maintain a strong Alexa ranking.

If the history of domain names is up your alley, I recommend checking out Arbel’s post.
